Did you know approximately one-third of home fires and home fire deaths occur during December, January and February?

Michigan ranks 8th in the country for the number of those fires.

Michigan, January, 2011 – From 2005 to 2009, State Farm Insurance experienced the highest number of total fire and smoke claims (excluding lightning) in December with 19, 323 claims, followed by January with 18, 495 claims.

Unattended cooking remains one of the top causes of home fires. But home heating equipment is second to cooking fires for causing home structure fires. More than half of home heating fires occur during December, January and February. Avoid setting up a space heater too close to curtains, furniture, or even holiday decorations. Remember to keep at least three feet of clear space around it and set it up on the floor unless it is designed for other use. Also don’t forget to reduce the chance of overheating, electric cords should never be bundled together or run under rugs or carpet. In Michigan last year, almost 257 reported fire claims to State Farm were from heating sources or cooking.

Fireplaces can be the culprit for many home fires. Most chimney fires are caused by the buildup of creosote, a highly combustible by-product of burning wood. To protect your chimney from creosote buildup, have it inspected and cleaned annually. Also, when cleaning your fireplace, put embers in a metal container and set them outside to cool for 24 hours before disposal. And remember; do not burn trash, cardboard boxes or Christmas trees in the fireplace. These items burn unevenly and may cause a dangerous flash fire.

Other possible causes of fires children playing with fire, unattended candles, counterfeit electronics that may not have passed inspections, overloaded outlets, and during December frayed holiday lights or dried out Christmas trees.

Burglars at home across Metro Detroit area

Cops warn break-ins can come in waves in any community
Mike Wilkinson / The Detroit News

If there is one crime that can touch almost every part of Metro Detroit, it's burglary.
It is a crime that knows no borders, one of opportunity that can strike in Detroit — but also in the upscale neighborhoods of Canton Township, Birmingham and Troy.
"The bad guys are going to go where the property and the money is," said Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe.
On Monday, Livonia Police Officer Larry Nehasil was tracking a group of burglars into Walled Lake when he exchanged gunfire with one of them.
Both men were killed.

Guardian Alarm Fixes Couple's Security System

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - It happens over 210 times a day in the state of Michigan, burglars breaking into homes like yours and taking whatever they want.

It happened to Michael Aeck and his wife Janet in July 2009. Michael says, “They stole all our guns, all my guns, electronics, computer equipment and some cash, all told about eight thousand bucks worth of stuff.”

Right after that, Mike and his wife signed a contract with ADT to install a burglar alarm system at the cost of $50 a month.

But on December 29th Mike and Janet discovered their ADT security system wasn’t working. That’s when Mike called the Call for Action team. And that’s when we called the guys at Michigan based Guardian Alarm Company.

For 80 years, Guardian has been installing and monitoring home and commercial burglar alarm systems.

When we explained what happened to Mike and his wife, Guardian agreed to install a full blown alarm system absolutely free. They also agreed to give Mike 3 months of monitoring service free. And after that, they will cut the cost of monitoring his home by 20%.

Now, with a brand new burglar alarm system that works, Mike and Janet can feel safe in their own home once again.

Kids Home For Snow Day Thwart Home Break-In

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Police in Nebraska say two children who were home alone during a snow day scared off a couple of burglars.

The Journal Star in Lincoln says a 12-year-old girl and her 10-year-old sibling heard someone break in through a door Monday and hid in a bedroom where she called police.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood says the girl looked through the bedroom door and saw the man, who told the person with him that people were in the house.

Flood says nothing was taken from the home.

A neighbor saw two people running off.

Police tracked footprints in the snow to a nearby bank. Flood says the bank was checking surveillance footage to see if the men were caught on tape.
