Theo Braboy was hired as a member of the Guardian Guard Services, Special Services Unit (SSU) in September of 2010. SSU’s are asked to do anything and everything. On the night of November 15th,2010 Theo was conducting a mobile patrol of a private community called Rudgate Clinton, he noticed smoke coming from a home in his patrol area. He immediately called 9-1-1. He then encountered a woman and some children standing outside. The woman told Theo that her husband was still inside so he went to the door and shouted for him to come out now! The husband wisely obeyed Theo’s commands and came outside. The woman’s elderly mother was sitting outside in a wheel chair, Theo pushed her farther away from the home where she would be away from the flames, the home next door also started to catch on fire. Theo was informed that an elderly woman was asleep in this home. Theo and another person went to this second home and when banging on doors and windows failed to rouse the elderly woman they then broke windows so they could shout inside. This finally got the woman’s attention and they were able to evacuate her out through her garage away from the flames. Theo then placed her in his patrol vehicle for warmth until the ambulance arrived. Even though there were people standing outside when Theo pulled up to the fire no one was doing anything, perhaps they were in shock. But when Theo got there he immediately took control of the situation and he is truly a Maximum Achiever. We don’t ask our security officers to put themselves in harms way or risk their lives, but Theo Braboy put the safety and welfare of others before his own when he went into the burning home.

Detroiters could be fined for false alarms

In an effort to reduce Detroit's notoriously slow police response times, police may soon stop investigating most residential and business burglary alarms until a crime is verified by the alarm company or a 911 caller.

The plan was pitched Monday to a City Council committee.

Of the more than 60,000 burglar alarms that sound each year in Detroit, fewer than 1% are credible, wasting more than 30,000 hours for each of the two officers who respond, said police Cmdr. Todd Bettison.

4 dead in home from carbon monoxide poisoning

A 39-year-old mother and her three children, ages 10, 16, and 18, were found dead Wednesday morning in the living room of their Central Toledo home after they died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police and fire investigators said Tamara McDaniel, 39, and her children - 18-year-old Damien Reyes, Dominique Reyes, 16, and Taralynn Wood, 10 - recently moved into their Hamilton Street home.

When crews entered the home at around 10:30 a.m. they discovered the house had no gas or electricity but did find a generator in the kitchen.

Smoke, carbon monoxide detectors vital for homes

Now that the clocks have sprung forward in that annual ritual known as Daylight Saving Time, it may be time to spring for new batteries for the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

In 2009, the latest year statistics are available, 2,565 people died in fires and 13,050 were injured, with deaths from fires being the third leading cause of fatal home injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Four out of five of those deaths occurred in homes without smoke detectors.

Small children are especially at risk in a home fire, and for them one unique smoke detector lets parents record a voice message intended to wake them up. Parents have about 15 seconds to rouse their child and to give them some calming direction. When triggered, the voice message alternates with a standard alarm.

"Basically when they go off it's your voice telling the child to get down near the floor, or whatever message the parent wants to give them," said Denny Sian, owner of Sanford Hardware.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., (WXYZ) - Home invaders break into a Sterling Heights home, while a woman was sleeping.

JoAnn Schirmacher says someone pried open the front door of her home on Saal road and then ransacked her bedroom while she slept.

She says she heard the noise, but thought it was her husband of nearly 50 years coming home, she says she even shouted out, "Why are you making all this racket?”.

Michigan man fights house fire with snowblower!

Water supply a problem? Lots of frozen water in the form of snow around the burning structure? Maybe it’s time to take a tip from Steve Luibakka of Diorite, Michigan in Marquette County. On Monday evening Luibakka was alerted that his neighbor’s home was burning. The fire had started in a couch and was blowing out the living room picture window when Luibakka arrived with a 30-pound fire extinguisher. Witnesses say flames were six feet above the roof line.

The extinguisher was a help, but only temporarily. Luibakka realized he needed another extinguishing agent that Ishpeming Fire Chief Andy Lusardi says largely extinguished the fire and reduced the amount of damage to the home:

“I was able to knock down the flames, but it was so hot. The heat was so intense, it just flared up again. I ran over to my son-in-law’s garage and grabbed his snowblower…and started blowing snow into the living room. It took about 10 minutes, but we were able to knock the flames down.”

Liubakka said while he was operating the snowblower, his son-in-law shoveled snow into the home, and into the auger of the snowblower.

“One firefighter said there was about 16 inches of snow in the living room. And even with all the snow, the temperature within the home at that time was still 170 degrees,” said Liubakka.

Lusardi said the fire was out when firefighters arrived at the scene.

He said using the snowblower to blow snow through the front window helped contain the fire to the living room.

Oceana County mother, three children treated for carbon monoxide poisoning

OCEANA COUNTY — Three children and their mother were taken to a local hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning early Wednesday after authorities were called to the home.

Hart Area Fire Department officials responded to the mobile home at 5800 W. Seventh in Mears just after 7:30 a.m. after the mother called 911 about a possible gas leak.

Authorities arrived to the home to find two young children under the age of 3 and a teenager who all complained of feeling ill for the past several days, a fire official said. The mother was also apparently sick, the official said.

Using a carbon monoxide detector, fire authorities discovered high levels of the gas in the home.

Hart Area Assistant Fire Chief Terry Haynor took the family to Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby for treatment.

Michigan, January, 2011 – From 2005 to 2009, State Farm Insurance experienced the highest number of total fire and smoke claims (excluding lightning) in December with 19, 323 claims, followed by January with 18, 495 claims.

Unattended cooking remains one of the top causes of home fires. But home heating equipment is second to cooking fires for causing home structure fires. More than half of home heating fires occur during December, January and February. Avoid setting up a space heater too close to curtains, furniture, or even holiday decorations. Remember to keep at least three feet of clear space around it and set it up on the floor unless it is designed for other use. Also don’t forget to reduce the chance of overheating, electric cords should never be bundled together or run under rugs or carpet. In Michigan last year, almost 257 reported fire claims to State Farm were from heating sources or cooking.

Fireplaces can be the culprit for many home fires. Most chimney fires are caused by the buildup of creosote, a highly combustible by-product of burning wood. To protect your chimney from creosote buildup, have it inspected and cleaned annually. Also, when cleaning your fireplace, put embers in a metal container and set them outside to cool for 24 hours before disposal. And remember; do not burn trash, cardboard boxes or Christmas trees in the fireplace. These items burn unevenly and may cause a dangerous flash fire.

Other possible causes of fires children playing with fire, unattended candles, counterfeit electronics that may not have passed inspections, overloaded outlets, and during December frayed holiday lights or dried out Christmas trees.

On Monday, Livonia Police Officer Larry Nehasil was tracking a group of burglars into Walled Lake when he exchanged gunfire with one of them.
Both men were killed.

Kids Home For Snow Day Thwart Home Break-In

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Police in Nebraska say two children who were home alone during a snow day scared off a couple of burglars.

The Journal Star in Lincoln says a 12-year-old girl and her 10-year-old sibling heard someone break in through a door Monday and hid in a bedroom where she called police.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood says the girl looked through the bedroom door and saw the man, who told the person with him that people were in the house.

Flood says nothing was taken from the home.

A neighbor saw two people running off.

Police tracked footprints in the snow to a nearby bank. Flood says the bank was checking surveillance footage to see if the men were caught on tape.

It’s common knowledge that a pair of Michigan cities are near the bottom end of annual crime rate rankings, but Oakland County can boast of having two of the safest cities in the country.

Detroit and Flint are ranked as the second and third most dangerous cities in the U.S., but Troy and Farmington Hills reside on the other end of the list.

In an annual report released by CQ Press, Troy ranks as the 13th safest city in the country with a population above 75,000, while Farmington Hills is not far behind at 30th. The cities are ranked the safest in Michigan with a population of that size.

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste ... And taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink and the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com.)

14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never ever look like a crook.

15. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

16. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.

17. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

18. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.

20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

21. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Southfield Public Schools OKs contract for guards

Southfield Public Schools is contracting security guards, rather than continuing to employ them, Deputy Superintendent Kenson Siver said.
On Tuesday, the Board of Education approved a three-year contract with Southfield-based Guardian Guard Services beginning July 1. The cost ranges from more than $480,000 the first year to more than $509,000 in the third year, according to the district. Employing in-house security cost just under $1 million a year, Siver said.
Guardian Guard Services said it will provide a minimum of 15 officers at eight different schools. Siver said the district previously had 11 guards.
The Southfield Police Department is still to provide liaisons in the district's two high schools, Siver said.

"ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - Three firefighters are recovering after being injured while fighting an early morning fire in Ann Arbor.

The fire broke out in the home on Georgetown at about 1:00 a.m. The family told officials they heard a noise and realized the house was on fire.

The woman who lives in the house was able to get out through the front door with the couple's 3-year-old child. Her husband and the couple's 6-year-old daughter made it out through a bedroom window. He then handed the girl down to her mother before climbing down the gutter himself.

FERNDALE: Copper thieves sought in break-ins

Police are asking residents to look out for thieves stripping copper pipes from vacant homes.

Thieves broke open the rear doors of at least six vacant homes in northwest Ferndale, north of 9 Mile and west of Woodward, during the past 10 days, Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson said Wednesday.

Police are asking residents to call 911 if they see crews at a neighbor's home, loading pipes, appliances or other metal into trucks.

Security System Helps Catch Two Ex-Convicts

Two ex-convicts from Detroit who are suspects for several nighttime break-ins in Macomb County, have been charged by St. Clair County authorities with breaking into a gasoline station in Casco Township and stealing over 200 cartons of cigarettes.Wayne Mendel Johnson, 43, and Jimmie Lee Felder, 47, are in the St. Clair County Jail on $50,000 bond set in 72nd District Court in Marine City.

They are accused of throwing a brick through a window at a Sunoco gasoline station on Interstate 94 and Division Road (32 Mile Road) on Monday morning and stealing 200 cartons of cigarettes valued at $10,000, according to Sgt. Craig Nyeholt of the Michigan State Police Post in Richmond.The suspects were arrested on I-94 and North River Road by Chesterfield Township police moments after the break-in. Police found the cigarettes in the back seat of their dark colored Jeep, Nyeholt said.

"Our officers were notified of the break-in when an alarm sounded," Nyeholt said. "A check of the security surveillance tape showed that two black men driving a dark colored Jeep threw a cinder block through a window and stole the cigarettes."We checked the surveillance tape which showed the suspects left in a dark colored Jeep.

That information was dispatched to Chesterfield Township police because we knew they had similar burglaries in their jurisdiction."Chesterfield Township Officer Robert Swanson set up surveillance on I-94 and saw a dark colored Jeep on Interstate 94 and stopped it at North River Road. Swanson arrested Johnson and Felder because they fit the description of the people wanted in connection with the Sunoco station robbery and the evidence of the break-in was found in the back seat of the vehicle.

Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said police questioned the suspects who are suspects in two similar incidents in Chesterfield Township. Police in Sterling Heights and St. Clair Shores want to talk to Johnson and Felder for similar "smash and grab" thefts in their cities.Both Johnson and Felder have been in and out of jails all of their adult lives, police said.

Felder has three drug delivery and drug possession arrests dating back to 1989 and five breaking and entering arrests. Felder also has five arrests for breaking and entering a building.Johnson, who goes by the aliases of Boss Hog, Orlando Jones, Marc Wiggins and James King, has several arrests dating back to 1984. He was convicted for two breaking and entering charges, two for stealing a vehicle, one for unarmed robbery, fleeing and eluding police and prison escape.Police said neither man spoke to police. The court will appoint a taxpayer paid lawyer to represent them.

They are being charged as habitual criminals.

It's been some time now since Shirley Schneeberger's home was broken into. No matter-- she's still on edge.
"It's the feeling," she explains, "when you know someone's been tracking through your house. The items were replaceable, but that feeling... someone's been in my home, without permission..."
Now her rural Olive Township neighborhood, along with a few others in southern Clinton County, is being targeted again.
"Over the last two weeks we've had a rash of daytime break-ins of houses," says Det. Sgt. Fritz Sandberg of the Clinton County Sheriff's Office. "Mostly these break-ins are happening around 10 a.m. To 3 or 4 p.m., while people are at work, kids are at school."
Sandberg believes the thieves will knock on your door, and if you're not home, they'll break in the back and steal whatever they can find.
"Electronic products, tv's, cameras, jewerly," he says.
We've all been taught when we're little that if a stranger comes to the door, pretend you're not home. But detectives say that might not be the smartest thing to do in this situation.
"We've had an incidents where people elect not to let someone know they were home. Then they go around in back and enter that way. Now we have a homeowner in the house, and a robber too. It's a bad situation," Sandberg says.
He says letting the person know you're home-- while staying safe-- can fend off potential burglars. Also, know your neighbors and pay attention to unusual cars. That's something Schneeberger echoes.
"Out here, you need to be vigilant. When someone drives into your driveway and you don't know who they are, you need to go see."

BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fatal mobile home fire in Belleville.
